Square dancing is a type of traditional American folk dance that has its roots in European dances, like English country dances and the French quadrille, and African American call-and-response dances. It’s called square dancing because it’s danced in a square formation, with one couple on each side of the square. While the origins of square dancing date back hundreds of years, this type of dance is still practiced today as a fun way to stay active. Square dancing is a good form of exercise that isn’t too strenuous for beginners and improves your balance, and it also sharpens your mental agility by requiring you to listen to and respond to the caller without hesitation.
